Course Description

This course is considered the academic starting-point of the Preparatory English Program. Pre-Intermediate skills with an emphasis on structured reading and listening texts are employed with an emphasis on skill development. Students will study basic sentence structure and be introduced to essay formation. Materials used are at a CEF A2-B1 level.

Learning Outcomes – Listening

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  • Develop their listening skills
  • Extract specific information
  • Identify the main subject of a listening

Learning Outcomes – Reading

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  • Develop their reading skills
  • Extract specific information from a text
  • Make inferences from information provided in a text
  • Identify the main subjects at both the paragraph and whole-text level
  • Infer the meaning of unknown vocabulary from context
  • Link pronouns with their referents

Learning Outcomes – Writing

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  • Produce a series of simple phrases and sentences linked with simple connectors like “and”, “but” and “because”
  • Produce a series of simple phrases and sentences about their family, living conditions, educational background, or present or most recent job
  • Create short, simple imaginary biographies and simple poems about people
  • Produce simple texts on familiar subjects of interest, linking sentences with connectors like “and”, “because”          or “then”
  • Can give their impressions and opinions about topics of personal interest (e.g. lifestyles and culture, stories), using basic everyday vocabulary and expressions

Learning Outcomes – Speaking

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  • Develop their speaking ability to pre-intermediate level in grammatical accuracy, pronunciation, interactive communication, and management of discourse

Learning Outcomes – Vocabulary

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  • Be able to properly use at least 800 known and newly-acquired vocabulary items, (A2/B1 level)
