Polynomial Factoring Competition

The recent Polynomial Factoring Competition aimed to enhance students' math skills and deepen their understanding of mathematical concepts. By definition, factoring a polynomial involves rewriting it as a product of irreducible factors, while the fundamental theorem of algebra relates the coefficients of a polynomial to its roots. Although expansion is routine, factorization requires creativity and skill, playing a crucial role in solving various mathematical problems. This key skill not only aids students in understanding equations but also supports their study of many other math topics and concepts, as well as its practical applications in daily life.

The contest was overseen by Mr. Husam Sharqawi and Mr. Abujiya Mu’azu R.

Objectives

The competition sought to:

  • Enhance student math skills
  • Increase understanding of math concepts
  • Improve knowledge of factoring techniques
  • Instill a methodical approach to problem-solving
  • Promote mathematical talent
  • Discover gifted PYP math students
  • Encourage and motivate talented individuals

Methodology

The competition began with a filtering stage, where the top eight students were selected. This was followed by a challenging stage that narrowed the competition to the top six students. The final stage was a knock-out round, where the top six talented students competed for the top three ranks.
